No: 219, 18 August 2018, Press Release Regarding the passing of Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General
It is with sorrow that we have learnt of the passing of Kofi Annan, who successfully served as the United Nations Secretary-General between 1997-2006.
One of the most distinguished African diplomats, Annan has contributed to world peace and has been awarded with the Nobel Peace Award. His work also has significance for foreign policy issues concerning Turkey.
In 2004, for the first time in the history of the Cyprus settlement negotiations, the UN Comprehensive Settlement Plan associated with Kofi Annan’s name was submitted to the approval of the two peoples on the Island. However, despite being accepted by the Turkish Cypriot side, it was rejected by the Greek Cypriot side in the simultaneous referenda.
We offer our deepest condolences to Kofi Annan’s family and relatives, as well as the friendly Ghanaian people.
