Turkey hosts over 23 million tourists in nine months

The number of foreign visitors to Turkey in the January-September period of 2010 increased by 5.98 percent, to 23.14 million, compared to the same period of 2009, according to figures released by Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Wednesday. Germany sent the highest number of tourists to Turkey, with 14.56 percent of total visitors, followed by Russia with 12.18 percent.

Tourists mostly entered Turkey via the southern province of Antalya - also known as the capital of Turkish tourism -, its commercial hub, Istanbul, and the western province of Mugla. In the first nine months of the year, 7.9 million tourists visited the Mediterranean region and another 5.2 million went to the Marmara region, while 2.6 million preferred resorts in the Aegean region.
